"Field Of Dreams" (1989) - Phil Alden Robinson
I recently came across "Field Of Dreams" playing on TV. While I had always enjoyed the film, it wasn't until seeing again year later that I began to appreciate the beauty of this simple film about baseball. Kevin Costner has starred in some stickers throughout his career, but neither is this film his greatest acting achievement, but for me, it is my favourite of his films.
When an Iowa corn farmer (Costner) begins to hear voices, directing him to build a baseball field in his prime farming land, many think it is the begin of the end for his sanity. However, as he risks everything to believe, he finds himself a part of the most important journey of his life. This moving tale about the magic of baseball and a sons longing for his fathers love, remains one of my favourite films.
While I do not want to wax melodramatic, I wonder what our lives would be like if we believed that our dreams could come true. Has the rational age of reason and science so robbed us that we can only believe in magic in films or books? Has our commitment to being responsible adults killed our ability to believe in that which we cannot see? For me, this film is a reminder that life is deeper and more meaningful than our respective jobs or duties.
If you get a chance, go out and rent a copy of "Field Of Dreams" some time soon. Give yourself time to set the mood, even share it with someone meaningful to you. Watch the movie and consider what it might be saying to you? I'm not talking about whispered voices and mysterious visions, but rather asking you to consider what is more important to you, what are your dreams.

Hey Jamie,
Field of Dreams is one of my favourite movies... that suprises some people who know me,
It has some personal meaning for me as I remember traveling on a Greyhound bus from Sydney to Melbourne feeling rather depressed and the movie they showed on the bus was Field of Dreams.
I found the movie inspiring and encouraging at a time when I really needed it. I don't want to read to much into this as I am sure Field of Dreams is a common enough movie on Greyhound buses across the world, but it was an inspiring movie.
The book it was based "Shoeless Joe" was also great.
Interesting facts about the book -
The authors and the main character have the same last name "Kinsella"
In the book, the famous real life author JD Salinger (author of Catcher in the Rye) was the writer that Ray sought out. They changed this in the movie to a fictional writer Terrance Mann (played by James Earl Jones) for the movie.
