"Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow" (2004) - Kerry Conran

There has been a great deal of hype surrounding the release of "Sky Captain and World of Tomorrow", Kerry Conran's directorial debut. In this high paced sci-fi adventure, viewers are treated to a rich world that can only be described as nostagically futuristic. One can hardly believe that, other than the actors, their costumes and few small props, everything you see in the film is computer generated. Yet, this ground-breaking use of CG is hardly noticed as you are swept up into one of the most fun and exciting films of the year.

Conran manages to create an alluring atmosphere that stirs an appealing nostalgia for an era that most viewers Grandparents weren't around for. Wonderfully cast, Gweneth Paltrow and Jude Law (not to mention Giovanni Ribisi) manage to play convincing characters reminiscent of the old gumshoe detective movies and old school sci fi, while not going over the top into cheesy stereotypes. The film manages to keep you on the edge of your seat with involved concern, yet not take itself so seriously as not to poke fun at itself.

This movie is well worth seeing, regardless of whether you are a science fiction fan or not. Conran has opened the door to rediscover and reimagine a film genre that is well worth revisiting. I hope you like as much as I did!

P.S. Watch out for another star of this film. A great knight who died over 15 years ago! Ah, technology.
