"Saved!" (2004) - Brian Dannelly

This hilarious and cutting comedy, about a group of teens coming of age in an evangelical Christian high school, has expectedly made my top 10 list for films this year. Sadly, due to shoddy advertising and a smaller release, few had the chance to take it in. However, with the recent release of the DVD, I recommend you add it to your list of "must see".

When Mary (Jena Malone) finds out she’s pregnant, her "friend" Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore) and her Jesus-crew pull out the "tough love". From spiritual socialite to spurned outcast, Mary discovers the true experience of love and community from the least expected sources.

Inevitably, some Christians, especially within the evangelical community, will be offended by this film, with its inevitable emphasis on tolerance towards homosexuality. They may also take exception to the harsh parodying of the evangelical subculture, which is, while exaggerated for cinematic purposes, is all too accurate.

That aside, I think this is a funny and poignant examination of teen angst and the Christian subculture that is increasingly apparent in our world (i.e. The Passion of the Christ). In fact, few people need to see this more than the Christian community. What better way to learn from your mistakes than to laugh at them.

While not an award winning by my standards, it was worth the full DVD purchase cost to add to my collection. This provocative, well cast film will leave you thinking. At the very least, it's good for a laugh. Check it out.
